A new chair has been elected for the Association of British Philatelic Societies (ABPS) at the recent annual general meeting, held during the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in Southampton.
John Davies RDP FRPSL was elected as the new chair of the ABPS and replaces Steve Harrison, who has been chair for the last 3 years. Dr. Gwynne Harries FRPSL was elected as Vice-Chairman at the same annual general meeting.
Of his new position John said: ‘We are all extremely grateful to Steve for his service as chairman. He tackled the role with great enthusiasm and professionalism and will be a difficult act to follow. I am very honoured to be elected and will do my best to serve the philatelic community in the coming year.’

Who are the Association of British Philatelic Society (ABPS)?
The Association of British Philatelic Societies was established in 1955 and represents the interests of UK collectors and societies in the UK and abroad. The ABPS is involved with a number of major annual events around the country including Stampex, Midpex and also organised the annual Philatelic Congress of Great Britain. They also support the growth of stamp collecting amongst young people by sponsoring and encouraging youth philately activities including through Stamp Active Network and Kidstamps.

The ABPS relies on the support of the UK’s philatelic societies, federations, clubs and individuals and attempt to give the UK philatelic market the best service for the least cost possible. The current annual affiliation fee for a club or society is only £1.50 per UK member.
The Philatelic Congress of Great Britain
The new chair of the ABPS was elected at this year’s Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, which took place in Southampton. The Philatelic Congress of Great Britain takes places once a year and is a chance for stamp collectors and philatelists from across the country to exchange ideas, display their collections and discuss different aspects of the hobby.

The location of the event changes every year and is held in a different city or region, allowing for collectors from different areas to participate. Each year the Congress Medal is awarded ‘in recognition of dedication to the hobby over many years’.
