Royal Mail have revealed images of 10 new stamps to mark the centenary of its commemorative stamps.

A century of UK philately

Each of the stamps in the 100 Years of Commemorative stamps pack features reproductions of classic British stamps of the past, including the very first commemorative stamp ever issued in 1924. On 23rd April 1924, the first UK stamp was issued to commemorate the opening of the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park in London. This stamp is featured on one of the 10 stamps in the pack, alongside two others from the reign of King V.

Each stamp includes a selection of three previously issued commemorative stamps and cover a wide variety of themes including royal jubilee’s and celebrations from the reigns of King George VI, with many of the stamps celebrating notable events from the reign of Elizabeth II. Over the past century, commemorative stamps have celebrated nature, outer space, literature, music, transport and film and television.

David Gold, director of external affairs and policy, said "Royal Mail stamps have mirrored the changes in society and culture at large and celebrate the UK and our national character. As commemorative stamps celebrate their 100 years, it is rather fitting that a special stamp issue should celebrate them."

100 Years of Commemorative stamps are available to pre-order on The Royal Mail website now from £14.40 and will be issued on the 16th April.
