Every year, the Royal Philatelic Society London (RPSL) presents its awards in various categories, this year the awards took place in July.
Winners at the Royal Philatelic Society London awards
This year 7 award winners were celebrated at the Royal Philatelic Society Awards. The Crawford Medal, which is awarded for the most valuable and original contribution to the study and knowledge of philately in book form, took place at the 3rd annual Crawford festival in June. This year, the medal was awarded to Portuguese India: Postal History and the First Issues from the ‘Natives’ to 1900, by twins Luis Barreiros FRPSL and Eduardo Barreiros FRPSL.

The Tapling Medal was awarded to Ulf J Lindahl FRPSL for his article ‘Restoration of the Ethiopian Posts: 1941-1952’. The Tapling Medal is awarded each year for the best article of supplement published in the society’s journal, The London Philatelist. The Tilleard Medal, which is given for the best afternoon display given to the society went to Peter Chadwick FRPSL, for his display on ‘Great Britain Postal History prior to 1840’. Two Lee Medals are presented at the awards ceremony, one for the best evening presentation and one for the best Zoom presentation. The Lee Medal for best evening presentation was awarded to Howard Hughes FRPSL for his presentation on The Maltese Cross, whilst the Lee Medal for Zoom presentation went to Steven Harrison FRPSL for his presentation on ‘The Philatelic Congress of Great Britain’.

This year, 3 members were presented with The London Medal for exceptional service to the Society. Paul Leonard FRPSL was chosen for his work within the Expert Committee, Eric Hutton FRPSL was chosen for his work as a volunteer and Alex Haimann FRPSL was chosen for the production of the ‘Clash of Empires’ exhibition, which took place in July 2023. This year there was no recipient of The Bacon Medal, which is only awarded occasionally to an Honorary Fellow in recognition of their contribution to the Society. This medal was last awarded in 2020.

Who are the Royal Philatelic Society London (RPSL)?
The RPSL is the oldest philatelic society in the world and was established in 1869 as The Philatelic Society, London. In 1896 HRH Duke of York became the society’s president and continued to hold the position until he ascended the throne. In 1906 His Majesty King Edward VII granted permission for the prefix ‘Royal’ to be used.

The society aims to promote, encourage and contribute to the advancement of the science and practice of philately. As well as this the RPSL aims to hold, promote or assist with philatelic exhibitions across the UK and worldwide.
