David Feldman in Switzerland will be holding their spring auction series from 17th – 22nd June.
How does the Spring Auction Series Work?
Throughout the course of the week, different catalogues will focus on particular areas of interest. The whole sale comprises an array of over 5,300 lots of stamps, essays, proofs, postal history and collections from all over the world and will begin on Monday 17th June with part X of the Joe Chalhoub Collection of Egypt. Early bidding for the vast array of philatelic material is now open and the auction catalogues are also available.

What’s available during the Spring Auction Series?
A highlight from the Joe Chalhoub Collection of Egypt is the largest known usage of the 1867-69 5pi brown, featuring 3 singles, 6 pairs and 1 block of 4, plus a 2pi blue pair, all tied on a large part registered 1869 envelope, going from Alexandira to Cairo (lot 10135). This item, which originates from the Royal Palace Collection has an estimate of CHF15,000-CHF20,000 or approx. £13,000-£17,500. This collection also features early stampless mail and the first and second issues, along with Kings Fouad and Farouk.

The auction taking place on Thursday 20th June will focus on Great British stamps. Highlights from this section include a mint horizontal block of 12 1840 1d black from place 7 (FA-GF) on experimental thin paper (lot 50225). This lot has a full margin on the left, shows part of an inscription which reads ‘Back be careful not to remove the Cem’ and has an estimate of £200,000-£300,000. Another standout lot from the GB stamps section is an entire letter sent from Manchester to Bordeaux on 1st June 1840. The letter features a strip of 3 1840 1d black (plate 2), 2 singles and a strip of 5 (lot 50155). It is neatly cancelled and tied by red Maltese Crosses and additionally cancelled by a French arrival circular destamp in red. The internal letter reads ‘this letter is a specimen of our new postage act’ and is an extremely rare overseas destination cover.

The Spring Auction Series will finish on Saturday 22nd June with lots from the British Empire including British West Indies, the Michel Houde Collection of the British Consular post office in Bangkok and the Cousins Collection of Overprints (Part II) among others.

A highlight from this auction is an exceedingly rare imprint strip of 4 of the 1913-22 3d. black and ochre Admiral from Rhodesia in mint condition (lot 51598), which has an estimate of £40,000-£50,000. Also available is an example of the 1964 Battle of the Falklands 6d black and light blue showing the HMS Glasgow instead of HMS Kent error (lot 51101). This lot is 1 of only 17 examples recorded and is estimated to fetch between £25,000 and £30,000.
