A set of 4 stamps has been released by New Zealand Post which celebrates the countries 2024 Paris Olympics athletes.

The 4 stamps in this issue all represent an aspect of the Olympic spirit and cultural identity that New Zealand has bought to the games since the country first competed as an independent nation in 1920.

The $2.30 stamp ‘For the Fern’ shows oars that have been emblazoned with the fern and the letters NZ. The design of this stamp represents the first time that New Zealand competed in the Games as an independent nation in the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games. The competing athletes hand-sewed the silver fern to their black singlets and began a 100-year tradition. The team of 4, including 15-year-old Violet Robb, became the founding members of the New Zealand team and travelled 9 weeks by boat to get to Antwerp so they could compete. The first member of the New Zealand team to win an Olympic medal was Darcy Hadfield, who took a bronze medal in the single-sculls rowing during the 1920 Olympics.

The $3.60 stamp in this series ‘For the Team’ shows a football field. This stamp is a representation of the growing numbers and strength of New Zealand’s summer and winter Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. At the Tokyo Olympic Games, 222 athletes competed for New Zealand, won a total of 20 medals, including 7 gold, across 11 sports. This was the second-most successful New Zealand Olympic team in history.

The third stamp in this series, the $4.30 ‘For the Fans’ stamp shows a group of spectators. The atmosphere the Olympics creates is amazing, whether you’re watching from the stands or the comfort of your own home. The competition is incredible and seeing athletes compete for their country is an extremely special occurrence.

The fourth stamp dubbed ‘For the Gold’ ($4.90) shows track cycling, which is an event New Zealand has won 14 medals for. Across the history of the Olympic Games, the country has won a total of 157 medals, including 63 gold. The first ever gold medal was won by Ted Morgan at the 1928 games in Amsterdam, where he won the welterweight boxing.
