Part 1 of Alfred F Kugel Collection up for auction

The American Philatelic Society (APS) has announced that the auction catalogue for part 1 of the Alfred F Kugel Collection of Postal History of the World is now available to download and bidding is now open.

What's up for sale from the Alfred F Kugel collection?

In February of this year, the APS Board of Directors selected Cherrystone Auctions of Teaneck, New Jersey to handle the sale of the material from the Alfred F Kugel collection. Scott English, director of the APS said ‘This sale offers collectors a chance to buy a piece of a truly amazing collection of material and support the APS, APRL, and philately for years to come.’

The first of many sales to come, part 1 of the sale will be held across 2 days and begin on 18th June. The sale will begin with United States Dollar values on cover, US States Postal Agencies in the Far East, US International Registration Exchange Labels, US Intervention in Mexico and Registered Mail from US Possessions.

There is also a selection of the International Intervention in China during the Boxer Rebellion, extensive showing of German colonies in China and the Pacific. Dozens of rare and unusual items are also up for sale including the unique Tientsin handstamps on 2m and 3m Reichspost. 

In addition to this there are selections of World War I, British Occupation of Baghdad, Jordan Salonika, Mafia Island, Saudi Arabia, plus somewhat elusive covers from the Austrian, Ottoman, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and British empires.

The auction catalogue for 18th and 19th June can be viewed online at Cherrystone Auctions and bids for items in the collection can be entered online now.

Who was Alfred F Kugel?

Alfred Kugel was one of the philatelic communities most prominent writers and exhibitors, but was perhaps best known as a military postal expert. During his lifetime he was associated with many philatelic organisations, notably Chicagopex, the Military Postal History Society (MPHS) and the American Philatelic Society

Upon his passing in May 2022, aged 91, his wife Dottie, honoured his wishes and donated his collection to the American Philatelic Society. The collection which comprised 69 boxes of philatelic material and 50 boxes of philatelic literature.
