The stories of Harry Potter are popular right around the world, so it's no surprise that there is a growing range of coins dedicated to the young wizard. Now The Royal Mint have issued a series of Harry Potter 50p coins, as our guide reveals.
In June 2022 a Royal Proclamation revealed that The Royal Mint will be releasing a series of Harry Potter 50p coins, to mark the 25th anniversary of the publication of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Fans were obviously very excited!
Harry Potter 50p coin
The first Harry Potter coins were revealed in October.
The Harry Potter coin, actually available on a range of denominations including the 50p, is the first of four coins to be issued as part of the series.
It should be noted these are 'collectable' coins, and won't be entered into general circulation.
The coin's design shows a portrait of the young wizard, was modelled by Ffion Gwillim at The Royal Mint, and features the work of Jim Kay, the artist who created the first fully illustrated edition of this Harry Potter story.
Many of the coins in the range also feature a ‘latent feature’ which rotates in the light to reveal a lightning bolt and the number ‘25’ to mark the anniversary year.
The Royal Mint also revealed that the follow-up coins will feature:
- The Hogwarts Express
- Albus Dumbledore
- Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Will the Harry Potter 50p coins be valuable?
Since the coins are issued as collectable coins, they will be made available via The Royal Mint shop for around £10, and the mintage will be listed as 'unlimited'. So it is not likely that demand will outstrip supply, and prices are not likely to rise.
However, such as the popularity of the Harry Potter stories, the demand may be huge and the coins may continue to be sought after.
Other Harry Potter coins
The new coins won’t be the first to feature the young wizard.
A 2002 50p coin has been issued on behalf of the Pitcairn Islands, featuring an image of Harry from the first film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Meanwhile, the Monnaie de Paris, France’s official mint, have issued a range of Harry Potter medals and coins, including a €10 coin in the shape of a ‘Sorting Hat’. It seems the wizarding world of Harry Potter is a growing theme for coin collectors.
